Age and developmentally appropriate toys and books and learning materials in this room may include play doh, chubby markers/crayons and paper, building blocks, picture books with easy words/letters/numbers, a kitchen play area, flash cards with letters/numbers/colors, puzzles, etc.
At this age, the fine motor skills are still being developed that are needed to write with crayons/markers/pencils. The children are exposed to letters and numbers and words through lessons, Circle Time, Library special and things that are posted around the classroom including their names. Most 2^1/2– 3 year olds are able to accurately draw straight lines horizontally and vertically and draw a circle. Some children are able to draw a stick person showing a head, body, arms and legs (although many will just have no body or no head).
Skills that we emphasize at this age include the concept of sharing; empathy; personal space; sitting still for short periods of time; and self control.
